Friends! To be honest, even I don't believe in ghosts and their haunts! Or the spirits revolving around their abandoned houses or following his/her family members as an unpaid - invisible bodyguards as potrayed in the movies we watch. But the following story will for sure make you question the fact that your thought was wrong!
You might have come across the tagline of a movie poster saying "A soldier is never off duty". In the coming narration you will find the new meaning of 'NEVER' in that sentence.
Wrap up and pack your backpacks, let's take a ride through Baba Harbhajan Singh's duty after death!
He was born on August 30, 1946 in Sadrana village located in Punjab. Like you and me, he was also a normal child who used to go back and forth to school and home in his childhood days. After finishing his schooling, he joined the 23rd Punjab Regiment of Indian Army on February 9, 1966. Life went on for him with satisfaction as he was guarding his motherland at such an young age!
ONLY BODY RESTED IN PEACE
Towards the end of 1968, the Himalayan states especially Sikkim was hit hard by natural catastrophic floods and landslides taking away many lives and leaving the living starving without food.
So, Baba was deployed there to escort a mule caravan with loads of food from his headquarters to a remote area across the Nathu-La pass.
He risked his life there and in seconds the risk turned to reality...Yes... On October 4, 1968, while riding on his horse he slipped and fell into the flowing stream and was washed away without even leaving a trace of him.
Baba failed to escape from the stream, however escaped from MORTALITY!
The army put up a massive search for his body but could not find it. So for those who have come this far to experience a ghost story, here it is...The immortal Baba Harbhajan Singh makes his entry!
3 days after his death, Baba came in one of his comrade Pritam Singh's dream and asked him to go to a particular location to find his body! So the next morning, without much hope when the soldiers arrived at the spot, it left them dumbstruck! Baba's body was there! And it was cremated with full military honours. You think this is just a usual dream?
No it isn't. And few days later, he came in another soldier's dream and asked to build a 'Samadhi' for him... And the army obeyed his words and even erected the famous Baba Mandir in East Sikkim.
He did not stop showing his presence. Chinese
army men started to see a figure wearing Indian military uniform riding on a
white horse, patrolling their territory during night hours. Our soldiers also say that Jawans who sleep during their on duty and those whose attires are not perfect used to get a slap from Baba.
You think these stories of ghosts slapping are old and dusty? Then what will you say when Baba had given warning to our army 3 days in advance about an attack planned by China? And of course there was an attack... But the Chinese did not know that we had the invincible and invisible 'Baba Harbhajan Singh' to our rescue, who still protects the border and army men as a spirit in
Nathula and hence he was famously referred to as “Hero of Nathula”.
BABA TOO NEEDS SOME LEAVE!
The real deal is about the army treating Baba as a fellow soldier……. He was promoted from a sepoy when he died to a Captain after his death. The army decided to even send monthly salary to his mother at home! He was also granted an annual leave from September 15 to November 15 every year. A seat will be reserved in his name and kept empty with 3 soldiers escorting throughout the journey to his hometown at Kuka district.
Remember if you happen to travel in the same train on
the same date with an empty berth near you.....Shhhhhh...Baba will be resting
there!
It is also noticeable that his leave will be cancelled at times when there are war clouds in the border. Was he only honoured by giving salary? No! When they have flag meetings in the border, a chair will be left empty on both the sides for Baba to sit and lead the talks peacefully. He got posthumus retirement in 2006 but we have evidences of him still being in duty.
In the Baba Mandir, soldiers on somedays find his bedsheets crumpled and muddy shoes even after cleaning them, indicating him going on guard duty at night!
Some people may call this as just a myth but remember even the armies of two countries believe in his spirits and even worship him as God! We Indians are obsessed by hearing only the memoirs and praises of actors and cricketers...
That's the reason I had taken this chance to share with you this unkown, strange story of one of the unsung heroes of our nation... If Baba gets to know this post, he would feel happy that the younger generation atleast knows that he had lived...Oh sorry!...is living a meaningful life!
